I've never really looked into it. Generally I just use whatever t1 and t2 I have available. If you look at the troops stats you'll see each troop type has a different carrying capacity and speed with melee mercs being the most well rounded. Because of that I tend to make twice as many mercs than the other t1's before a kvk so I can utilize them in tile farming. This is a good question to ask on clan chat. Others may have better ideas or knowledge than I do.
